Accra Academy is one of the foremost secondary educational institutions in Ghana and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding boys’ school. It is located at Bubiashie near Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region. It was the first private academy to be established in the Gold Coast.
The academy teaches programs in business, general science, general arts, agricultural science and visual arts, leading to the award of a West African Senior School Certificate.
The academy’s founders provided tuition to students who wanted a secondary-grade education but who did not have financial support to enable them do so. Dr. Kofi Konuah periodically travelled to some of the major towns in each region of the country to organize entrance examinations for students, so as to offer the brilliant but needy among them the opportunity of education in the Accra Academy.[21] The academy no longer offers special admission to brilliant but needy students but, as per a 2005 general directive from the Ghana Education Service, admits its students through a school selection placement system.
The academy was established as a private secondary educational institution in 1931 and gained the status of a Government-Assisted School in 1950. In 1981, the academy gained the status of a completely developed senior secondary school. In 1990, the academy was designated a semi-autonomous secondary educational institution. The academy’s management which is led by a headmaster operates with the aid of a board of governors, a Parent-Teacher Association and a students’ representative council.
Accra Academy was ranked 8th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa by Africa Almanac in 2003, based upon quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumni, school profile, internet and news visibility.
Admission Process
New students are admitted every September through a computerized system managed by the Ghana Education Service.
Admission is based on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) results, held annually for junior high school students at various centers nationwide.
Entry forms for the B.E.C.E examination are obtained from the West African Examination Council (W.A.E.C) through junior high school headteachers.
After the computerized selection process, the Ghana Education Service releases the admission list to the school, which is then posted on the school’s notice board.
Foreign nationals can apply for admission through a written entrance examination organized by the school.
Students from other senior high schools or fresh senior high school starters can contact the school’s administration directly using the contact information provided.
Upon admission, students receive the school’s official prospectus, which outlines requirements and expectations.
