Teaching on Forgiveness

Topic: The Power of Forgiveness

Key Scripture: “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” — Matthew 6:14

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful principles in the Christian faith. It is not always easy, especially when someone has deeply hurt, betrayed, disappointed, or offended us. Yet Jesus teaches us that forgiveness is not optional for the believer—it is part of walking in the love of God.

1. What is forgiveness?

Forgiveness is choosing to release someone from the debt of an offense rather than allowing anger, bitterness, or revenge to control your heart.

Forgiveness does not mean:

  • What happened was acceptable.
  • You must forget what happened.
  • You must immediately trust the person again.
  • You cannot establish healthy boundaries.

Forgiveness means surrendering the matter to God and refusing to live as a prisoner of the offense.

2. God has forgiven us

Before we can understand how to forgive others, we must understand how much God has forgiven us.

Ephesians 4:32 says:

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

We forgive because we have first received forgiveness from God.

3. Jesus commanded us to forgive

Jesus gave us a powerful example on the cross. Even while suffering, He prayed:

“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” — Luke 23:34

If Jesus could extend forgiveness in such a painful moment, we also need to learn to release those who have offended us.

4. Forgiveness breaks the power of bitterness

Unforgiveness can keep a person emotionally connected to an offense for years.

You may not be able to change what someone did to you, but you can decide what that offense will continue to do inside you.

Hebrews 12:15 warns us about a “root of bitterness.”

Forgiveness helps remove that root.

5. Forgiveness is a decision, not merely a feeling

Sometimes we say, “I will forgive when I feel better.”

But forgiveness often begins with a decision:

“Lord, I choose to forgive this person. I release the offense into Your hands. Heal my heart and help me move forward.”

The feelings may take time to change, but the decision can begin today.

6. Forgive repeatedly

Peter once asked Jesus:

“Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?”

Jesus answered:

“Until seventy times seven.” — Matthew 18:21–22

Jesus was teaching that forgiveness should become part of our character rather than something we offer only when convenient.

7. Forgiveness does not remove wisdom

Forgiving someone does not mean allowing them to repeatedly abuse, manipulate, or harm you.

You can forgive someone and still say:

“I love you, but I need boundaries.”

You can forgive and still seek justice where appropriate. You can forgive and still learn from what happened.

Practical Steps to Forgiveness

  1. Acknowledge the hurt. Don’t pretend it didn’t happen.
  2. Bring the pain to God. Tell Him honestly how you feel.
  3. Choose to forgive. Make the decision before God.
  4. Release revenge. Let God deal with judgment.
  5. Pray for healing. Ask God to remove bitterness and restore your heart.
  6. Set wise boundaries when necessary.
  7. Move forward. Don’t allow yesterday’s offense to control tomorrow’s destiny.

Conclusion

Forgiveness is not weakness. Forgiveness is spiritual strength.

When you forgive, you are not saying the offense didn’t matter. You are saying:

“What happened to me will not control the rest of my life. I give this pain to God, and I choose freedom.”

Declaration

I choose to forgive. I release every offense, every betrayal, every disappointment, and every hurt into the hands of God. I refuse to walk in bitterness. May God heal my heart, restore my peace, and give me the grace to love again. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
