The idea for the establishment of the Nandom Senior High School was the brainchild of his late Eminence Peter Cardinal Porekuu Dery, the then Catholic Bishop of Wa.
He contacted the Brothers of Mary Immaculate Conception (FIC Brothers) to establish a school in the North-Western part of the then Upper Region, now Upper West Region, to provide both formal education and moral training based on Christian principles to young boys in the area to become responsible and useful citizens in any society they find themselves.
Nandom Senior High School was established in 1968. The school was founded by the Catholic Diocese of Wa assisted by the Brothers of Immaculate Conception (Brothers FIC). The Government of the Netherlands offered financial assistance.
Indeed, it was the 3rd-second cycle school to be opened in the Upper West Region, after St. Francis Girls Secondary School which was for only girls, and St Francis Xavier Junior Seminary which was a minor seminary, and so there was a need to open one for boys if not the boys had to go all the way to the Tamale, Navrongo or Wiaga to access secondary education.
The school started with the first batch of 36 students in Kaleo and later moved to its present site in Nandom in 1969. On the 1st of September 1972, the Ghana Government absorbed the school into the public system of Education.
The Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. C.B Ariens officially opened the school on 15th February 1973 in the presence of the Upper Regional Commissioner and the General Superior of the FIC Brothers. The Late Eminence Peter Cardinal Porekuu Dery performed the blessing of the school. In May 1976, a Sixth Form was started with an intake of 43 students.
