Yendi Senior High School was founded in September 1970 when the then Eastern Dagomba district Middle School was converted into a boarding Secondary School. It was basically a boarding School with the first intake of seventy (70) Students. The following year, seven female students were offered admission into the school thereby making it, a co-educational institution. The school is not only the largest in terms of geographical size but only auditable boarding school in the north eastern corridor of the country.
After twenty-years of existence the school has faced poor staffing problem inadequate accommodation for both students and teacher, even though it has participated in extracurricular associated with second cycle institutions such as soccer and athletic activities. An event worth mentioning was the visit of the Director-General of education in 1983 to acquaint himself with challenges confronting the school. During the 1990/01 academic year the French Ambassador visited the school on 29th November 1990, accompanied by the then District Secretary and some French teachers from tamale Senior High School. The Ambassador met the then Headmaster, Staff and Student of the school. Before leaving he presented some few books to the school.
